MPEG-TS divides multiplexed media into small fixed-size packets and carries timing and programme information alongside elementary audio and video streams. It is widely associated with digital broadcasting, UDP/RTP IPTV and classic HLS .ts segments.
Fragmented MP4 separates initialisation from media fragments
An fMP4 presentation stores codec and track setup in an initialisation section and timed samples in later fragments. In an HLS media playlist, EXT-X-MAP identifies the initialisation resource required before decoding the fragments.

Why MPEG-TS remains common
Transport stream has broad support in broadcast equipment, established IPTV networks, encoders and mature players such as VLC. Existing infrastructure and target-device compatibility can matter more than adopting a newer container.
Container choice does not guarantee codec support
A browser may understand fMP4 but reject the codec profile inside it. Likewise, VLC may demultiplex an MPEG-TS input but still need a decoder for its video and audio. Inspect the CODECS attribute and actual media tracks rather than diagnosing only by .ts or .m4s extension.
